On-line participation moving closer to eDemocracy in Milan
Milan residents now have a new electronic tool to bring them closer to their city, and give them a louder voice in democratic decision-making. PartecipaMi.it is an interactive portal that gathers together a whole range of news and information sources, as well as opportunities for consultation, debate, and exchange of views.
The new site follows up on the success of the on-line pilot project launched for the local elections in May 2006, when voters were offered the chance to air their opinions on the programmes put forward in their own areas.
The portal presents a series of technologically sophisticated instruments for sharing ideas and proposals for improving the urban environment. The aim is to create a city adapted to the needs of those who live in it from day to day. News and events are clearly visible on the homepage, as are the interactive areas, including thematic discussion forums and a blog, highlighting the numerous initiatives both official and unofficial under way in Milan.
A clickable map of the city puts residents directly in touch with councillors in their own areas, and a local authority forum provides information documents and hosts debates. There is also a calendar of upcoming council meetings and agendas and, below this, readers can find reports of proceedings.
A very simple registration procedure enables people to enter as users, and a page of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) outlines the practical things they need to know to make the most of the interactive options.
PartecipaMi.it is a virtual meeting place that reflects the soul of the city, in all its diversity. It was developed by the Rete Civica di Milano (Milan civic network), in collaboration with a number of other partner organisations.
